We are experts in dead animal removal, and take our job seriously. When removing dead animals, we do a COMPLETE job — not only do we remove the dead animal from your home or yard, we also decontaminate the area, deodorize it, and dispose of the animal or cremate it. If you aren't sure whether the stench in your house is due to a rotting carcass or another reason, we can sniff it out with our noses from our years of experience. We remove dead raccoons, dead opossums, dead skunks, dead squirrels, dead birds, even dead dogs and cats. We frequently remove dead rodents from inside walls, because poison kills rats and mice, who die in your house. We completely solve your dead animal problem by taking these steps:

  • Sniff out the dead animal if it is somewhere in your home
  • When necessary, for example if the animal is in a wall or under your house, cut a hole to remove the animal
  • Remove the dead animal, safely and completely (and seal the hole if needed)
  • Finish the job by decontaminating and deodorizing your home
  • Properly dispose of the dead animal through incineration or other means
  • Prevent it from happening again by finding out how they got in your house

Dead animal carcass removal is specialty work. Sometimes the job is simple, such as a dead opossum in the yard, in which case we can simply wear our gloves and respirator mask, bag the carcass, and take it away for incineration. Sometimes this is more complex, such as when the dead animal is under a home crawlspace, under a porch or deck or shed. Or if the animal is larger, such as a dog or a deer. The most complex cases are dead animals inside the house. The animal may have died inside the attic, or down in the walls, or the duct work, or any other part of the architecture. You may have a bad smell in your home, and you're not even sure what's causing it. We've removed not just dead animals, but rotting food, bad mold, etc. We specialize in locating the source of the smell, and we very commonly cut a hole in the ceiling or wall to remove the animal. We remove every bit of the carcass, mop up the juices, vacuum the maggots, spray it and wipe it down with disinfectant, cleaner, and we repair the hole we cut. In some cases we use ozone machines to neutralize odor.

Saint Paul Dead Animal Tip:

What to Do If You Have a Dead Animal Under Your House

Most animals avoid direct contact with humans. That means they infest attics, wall spaces, and under houses. Crawlspaces are a common location for pests, providing safety and security from predators. But it also presents a significant challenge for homeowners when one of these pests dies.

The first signs of a dead animal under your house will likely be the smell. Initially, the smell will be unnoticeable. But, over time, it will gradually increase, giving off a considerable stench. The presence of a carcass will also attract other pests, such as cockroaches, flies, and maggots. Other rats may even feed on it in extreme scenarios.

To prevent such a situation, you will want to remove the dead animal as soon as possible.

Step 1. Locate the animal

If you think you've smelled a dead animal, start by taking a look beneath your property. Using a flashlight, hunt for the location of the dead animal. Many different creatures could be found, including raccoons, skunks, opossums passing through, or mice and rats that have nested. Even a feral cat or dog is a possibility.

Be careful getting too close. If one creature has died there, it is possible others remain. If provoked, they could attack. You also need to consider the presence of a dangerous disease, such as rabies. In such cases, hiring a professional is the best solution.

Examine the size of the animal, the location, and possible methods of removal. If you struggle to locate the dead animal, look for tracks or other physical signs that could indicate a possible location. Remember, the animal likely picked the spot to stay hidden, so you'll have to do a bit of searching.

Step 2. Remove the animal

Once you've located the carcass, it's time for removal. Before beginning, put on as much protective equipment as you have available. At a minimum, a mask, gloves, and long-sleeved shirts and pants should be worn.

Have a heavy-duty garbage bag ready to put the carcass inside. Use tools to try to pry the animal out. Then, place it inside the bag. Avoid doing this alone, as you do not want to get stuck without someone to get help.

Step 3. Dispose of the carcass

There are two primary methods to dispose of the carcass: burial or burning. Remember to follow the local area regulations. Burial is often the safest option, as the carcass can remain inside the bag, reducing interaction. If you are unsure how to dispose of the dead animal, contact your local animal control department for further details.

Step 4. Remove all animal tissue and clean

If the animal has been decaying below your property for some time, then it may not have come out in one piece. Make sure to remove all dead animal tissue. Failure to do so will attract pests, and the odor will remain a problem.

You can also place deodorizers, such as charcoal briquettes or cat litter, near the affected area, to capture the smell. Such simple household items are remarkably effective at odor absorption. Also, remember to clean around the regions using detergent and enzyme cleaners.

Step 5. Close up the hole

To prevent a recurrence of the problem, close up any holes or access points under your house. If one animal entered, it is likely more would do so in the future. It is also sensible to check any potential attractants of pests, such as garbage. Take all appropriate steps.

Hire a professional

Removing a dead animal from your kitchen floor is one thing; extracting one buried beneath your home is another. If you are also faced with live animals, it makes the situation impossible to resolve. That's the time to call a professional.

With specialized equipment, they'll be able to handle the removal entirely and deal with an infestation in one trip. They'll also provide advice on preventing future reoccurrences. If there is even a slight risk of rabies, then a professional should always be contacted. Rabies is a severe illness with high mortality. The risk simply isn't worth it.
