What to Do If You Have a Dead Animal Under Your House

Most animals avoid direct contact with humans. That means they infest attics, wall spaces, and under houses. Crawlspaces are a common location for pests, providing safety and security from predators. But it also presents a significant challenge for homeowners when one of these pests dies.

The first signs of a dead animal under your house will likely be the smell. Initially, the smell will be unnoticeable. But, over time, it will gradually increase, giving off a considerable stench. The presence of a carcass will also attract other pests, such as cockroaches, flies, and maggots. Other rats may even feed on it in extreme scenarios. 

To prevent such a situation, you will want to remove the dead animal as soon as possible. 

Step 1. Locate the animal

If you think you've smelled a dead animal, start by taking a look beneath your property. Using a flashlight, hunt for the location of the dead animal. Many different creatures could be found, including raccoons, skunks, opossums passing through, or mice and rats that have nested. Even a feral cat or dog is a possibility.

Be careful getting too close. If one creature has died there, it is possible others remain. If provoked, they could attack. You also need to consider the presence of a dangerous disease, such as rabies. In such cases, hiring a professional is the best solution.
